Animated GIF's
Animated GIF's are animations that do not use Flash which will keep your website iPhone and iPad friendly as well as usually decreasing page loading time. There are two basic styles of Animated GIF's I have used in web design, cartoon or sequential animations like the frog below:
And slide show variations where all or part of an image automatically changes:

Javascript Photo Galleries
This is a sample photo gallery of my first Styx concert
The biggest benefit to using Javascript for your photo gallery instead of Flash is that it's not Flash. Flash based photo galleries require Flash players and/or the latest plug ins installed for visitors to be able to view your images. An added benefit is that Javascript will load in faster than a Flash photo gallery and is iPhone and iPad accessible.
Creating one entails making two sets of photos, a thumbnail and enlargement of each image. When the reader rolls their cursor over or clicks on a thumbnail (there are variations available) the small thumbnail enlarges in the viewing area.

Rollover Image Menus:
A typical HTML menu is words that are links usually in a font like Arial or Times as they are web friendly fonts that every person would have.
If you want to use a special or designer font you are best off using image files instead because if a viewer doesn't also own the same font on their computer it will default to one like Arial or Times, ruining the aesthetic of your page design and possibly even marring the layout.

Sample Rollover Menu Link
An image rollover menu is where you create two image files one is the static image that appears when the page is loaded, the rollover is the image that appears when you roll your mouse or cursor over the image that is a link, changing the appearance of the original static image. Like the sample below. If you roll your cursor over the word "Home" the background becomes a different color indicating to readers it is a link they can click on.
